Diana L. Shechtman, OD, FAAO

Director of Professional Relations

Dr. Shechtman leads Retina Consultants of Miami's relationships with the optometric and physician community of South Florida. After nearly two decades teaching and practicing full-scope medical optometry, she now works with the practices that refer to us, supporting co-management, answering clinical questions about referral timing, and providing education on retinal disease for optometrists and their staff.

Dr. Shechtman is a board-certified optometrist who obtained her degree from Nova Southeastern University in 1998 and completed an ocular disease residency at Fox Medical Center in Miami in 1999. She later obtained her oral prescription certification and DEA. She was a full-time professor for 18 years at Nova Southeastern University, where among her many roles she served as coordinator of the Diabetes & Macula Clinic and Director of the Interdisciplinary Education Program. She completed a six-month retinal clinic shadowing sabbatical, and has practiced full-scope medical optometry as a consultative optometrist at Retina Macula Specialists of Miami and Eye Centers of South Florida. She also serves as an adjunct professor for a number of colleges of optometry through externship educational programs.

Dr. Shechtman is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the Optometric Retinal Society, an active board member for Women in Eyecare (WIE) and Latinos en Optometry (LEO), and serves on numerous professional committees, including as secretary for the Broward Board. She participates on industry advisory boards and professional speakers bureaus, has served on several editorial review boards, and co-authored the Retinal Dilemmas and BMC case reports as well as the Florescence retinal editorial board and GA-MAC Delphi panel. She continues to contribute journal publications, poster presentations and research grants, and was the primary investigator for the VAST and ICOD studies.

Named by Newsweek as one of the “Best Eye Doctors,” Dr. Shechtman has lectured extensively at the local, national and international level on ocular disease and chaired the TRIOD Conference from 2018 to 2021. She is fluent in Spanish.
